BANTAYAN AND CEBU SOJOURN

The center and the most populous area in the Visayas region is as cosmopolitan as any city can get. But Beyond The bustling city scene, Cebu still has a lot to offer to regular traveler. Apart from the rich culture of the island, there is another treasure that makes it one of the most visited provinces in the Philippines. Off coast of mainland Cebu lies the pristine and paradise island of Bantayan, my chosen destination for this travel story.

To get to Cebu, we decided to be more adventurous by doing the RORO route. We rode our way to Pilar, Sorsogon via the Philtranco Bus in Pasay terminal. After 12 hours of land travel we arrived at the wharf just in time for the 7am RORO trip to Aroroy, Masbate.
It took us 3 hours to get to the island of Masbate, from there we took a bus going to the Cawayan Port which is the jump-off point to Bogo, Cebu via RORO vessel. The ship leaves every 12 noon. And after 4 hours of being in the sea we arrived in Cebu.

A 20 minute tricycle ride from Bogo took us to Hagnaya Port. while there we rush to make travel arragements to Bantayan island. Ferry service is available from 5am to 6pm depending on the tides. In less than an hour our ferry arrived in Santa Fe, Bantayan Island.

According to a local guide, fare prices drop as much as 50% when the ferries happen to be on the port and scheduled to leave at the same time. We were not lucky during our trip.

From Santa Fe we rushed to our hotel and proceeded to the town of Bantayan at 15 pesos fare via jeepney. We saw well preserved old architechtures like churches and ancestral homes. A church made of coral stones, the Saints Peter and Paul church has remained intact after it was built during the Spanish era.

After the Bantayan town we make our way to Madridejos via motorcycle for hire for 300 pesos, there we visited the ruins of the Spanish Watchtower which means Bantayan got its name. We decided to call it a day and went backto our hotel in Santa Fe Beach Club their rates are as follows: 900 pesos to 1000 pesos for non-aircon rooms and 1,600 pesos - 7,000 pesos for air-conditioned rooms.

Off to Cebu via ferry from Bantayan to Hagnaya port then we took a bus to Cebu City.

The province of Cebu is abundant in heritage structures and churches that have stood the test of time. 2 to 3 hours bus ride for 75 pesos fare In Bogo there is the San VIcente Ferrer Church which was built during the american colonial period. In Danao 1 hour bus ride for 30 pesos is tha St. Tomas De Villanueva Church built in 1755 with coral stones architecture. The church has a very well preserved facade but the interior is already modern. In Liloan, we found a lot of old buildings, a spanish lighthouse, an american lighthouse built in 1904.

In Carcar one of the oldest town in Cebu lies St. Catherine Church which is the second oldest church in Cebu next to Saints Peter and Paul.
